Honey Bees

Vanishing-of-the-beesOn August 6th, 2013, Slow Food Wellington County held a film screening and speaker panel series on the decline of honey bee populations in Wellington County.

The evening began with a screening of The Vanishing of the Bees. We had nearly 200 in attendance. Following the film, we had a guest panel discussion with Dr. Rene Van Acker, the Associate Dean of the Ontario Agriculture College at the University of Guelph, Nathan Carrey, a local organic farmer and coordinator with the Friends of the Pollinators Action Coalition, and Jim Coneybeare, a 3 generation bee keeper in our county who has had to relocate further north as he’s loosing too many bees.

Jim believes his bees are dying because of the use of neonicitinoids. A deadly insecticide that is genetically injected into the heart of corn and soy seeds, an insecticide that is doing serious damage to our pollinators.

Christopher Jess, from SFWC, is involved in provincial actions to solicit a full moratoreum on the use of these deadly seeds.
